Wouldn’t it be cheaper to build more roads?
There is no mode of transportation that is free to the tax payer. Roads cost tax money to construct and maintain. These funds come from local, state and federal taxes and fees depending on who is responsible for that road. City and County governments construct and maintain local streets, states construct and maintain state highways and farm to market roads, the federal government constructs and maintains the interstate highway system.

Federal Funds that are used to fund rail are dedicated public transit funds that cannot be used to construct roads. There is a separate fund at the Federal level for the construction and maintenance of highways.
