Linda Spurlock Park Renovation
Project Update - September 18
The Linda Spurlock Park Renovation project is moving slightly ahead of schedule. Dean Construction recently completed approximately 80% of the concrete work for the project to include the perimeter of the playground with accessible ramps, adjoining sidewalks, swing bench and picnic table pads and the accessible parking areas with accessible ramps on Dawn Dr. All storm water utilities along with above ground drainage is in the final stages of development. Additional current work includes the final color selections for the new restroom building and pavilion and forming for the additional concrete work left to be done. While some components of the project are ahead of schedule the delivery of the restroom building is on time to be delivered in middle February. The restroom delivery aligns with the original schedule for the completion of the park.
Project Update - September 1
Dean Construction began work at Linda Spurlock Park just a little over a month ago, and has made significant progress so far. The demolition of the restroom, pavilion and playground was accomplished in less than two weeks. Crews have completed all utility relocations and will finalize the final tie-ins in the next two weeks. Excavation for the 3 new accessible parking spaces along Dawn Drive, sidewalks and playground area is complete and ready for further development. The dry weather over the past month has helped crews make rapid progress and the vision of the newly developed park is coming to life.
Project Update - August 6, 2020
Construction for Linda Spurlock Park began on July 20, 2020 and is expected to be complete by the end of February 2021. The contractor, Dean Construction placed tree protection devices along with erosion control and perimeter fencing for the construction area during the first week. The demolition of walkways, the playground, the restroom and the pavilion will continue throughout August. Irrigation crews are beginning their preliminary work to reroute portions of the irrigation main around the new facilities. During construction, the north half of the trail loop and adjacent park area will remain open for people to enjoy, however, the public is asked to please stay clear of the construction zone.
Linda Spurlock Renovation Project to Begin on July 20, 2020
We are excited that the renovation project at Linda Spurlock Park will begin on July 20, 2020 and is expected to be complete by March 2021.
The park, located at 6400 Glenview Drive, opened in 1995 and is named after previous City Councilwoman Linda Spurlock. Mrs. Spurlock was the first female to serve on the North Richland Hills City Council, serving from 1987-1997. She passed away in January 1998.
The 14.5 acre park will receive almost $900,000 in improvements and is funded by the ½ cent sales tax for park development and park land dedication fees. Improvements include a new robust interactive playground with separate elements for ages 2-5 and ages 6-12. Additionally, a new picnic pavilion, for birthday parties, family reunions and other events, will be constructed.
Improvements will also include additional adjacent shaded picnic tables and a new restroom facility, each of which will conveniently be located near the playground. Most of the active elements will be located in the southwest area of the park with beautiful views of the fountain and pond. The project will also include an expansion of the .6 mile loop trail, with an additional section linking the west side of the park to the east side providing an optional shorter walking route.
The majority of the park is closed to the public beginning July 20, 2020 during construction. There will be limited public access, with no park amenities available. Park users are encouraged to explore other parks in the city while the park is under construction.
While Linda Spurlock Park is under construction there will be:
- No Public Restrooms
- No Drinking Fountains
- No Access to Playground
- No Access to Pavilion
- No Access to South end of the Walking Trail
The Public may still access the north end of the walking trail, but full loop access will not be available.
Construction is expected to be complete in March 2021. Check back here from project progress and updates. Linda Spurlock Schematic.
