Traffic Calming Policy
Occasionally our city streets are not used in the safe manner that they were designed for. When this occurs, traffic calming may be a way to reduce the unsafe driving of some motorists with minimal disruption to efficient traffic flow. The City of North Richland Hills Traffic Calming Policy is designed to limit the speed and/or the number of vehicles on residential streets and to safely move traffic from one point to another. This can involve measures from police enforcement and neighborhood watch programs to strategic physical changes to residential streets. You may obtain a copy of the Traffic Calming Policy by clicking here or by calling 817-427-6460.

Stop Signs
The Public Works Department frequently receives requests by citizens for multi-way or all-way stop signs on residential streets to control speeds. Numerous studies have shown that speed reduction is only observed in the immediate vicinity of where the stop sign was placed. Motorists tend to increase their speeds between the stop signs. Motorists also tend to lose respect for stop signs where little traffic exists on cross streets. Non-warranted stop signs cause unnecessary delays for the motorists and they also increase air and noise pollution. Stop signs are primarily designed to assign right of way at intersections. Stop sign requests are evaluated on traffic volume distribution, speed, delays to motorists, and accident history, as outlined by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Please call the Public Works Street Division at 817-427-6460 to request more information about stop signs.

Traffic Signal Lights
Traffic signal lights are needed when traffic volumes increase beyond the capacity of lesser controls, such as multi-way stop control. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices establishes the minimum criteria for installing traffic signal lights. The criteria includes:

  • the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic
  • the need to provide interruption to the major street for side street vehicles and pedestrians
  • accident history of the location
  • proximity to schools

Please call the Public Works Street Division at 817-427-6460 to request more information about traffic signal lights.
